Columbia Icefields Course

by: Andrew Macdonnell September 29, 2015

Ice and snow course on the Columbia Ice Fields and Ascent of Mount Athabasca.

Our three day journey started on Saturday July 4th covering self-arrest with our ice axe, roping together and team crevasse rescue on the Park Ridge snow fields. Sunday had us on the Columbia ice field for more crevasse rescue, how to walk in crampons and use ice screws.

Our ascent of mount Athabasca started with an alpine start at 2:00 am on the western lateral moraine at the base of mount Athabasca where we climbed to a transition zone at the edge of the glacier.

Here we placed on our crampons and began to traverse the Athabasca glacier under the silver horn. The traverse found us on the underside on the eastern edge of the silver horn at about 4:30 am where we witnessed a beautiful sunrise cresting above the Rockies. We then started our vertical ascent up the mountain before traversing across the ramp.

Our traverse across the ramp brought us to the base of silver horn. Near the top of silver horn the terrain shifted from ice and snow to lose shale making the climb a bit slippery with our crampons. No easy way to get through this section!  At the top of silver horn we could see our destination the summit of Mount Athabasca and within 30 minutes we were standing at 11, 453 ft., (14th highest peak in the Canadian Rockies), on a mostly clear day and a 360 degree panoramic view of the majestic Rocky Mountains and Saskatchewan glacier. A few pictures and a snack and 15 minutes later we were heading down. The total round trip took us 9.5 hours and was a memorable experience worthy of such an early start.

Local Dentist in Kelowna Graduates From the Prestigious Kois Center

by: Dr. Macdonnell December 27, 2013

Dr. Andrew Macdonnell, chief practitioner at Advance Dental Group in Kelowna and an accomplished dentist, graduates from the prestigious Kois Center located in Seattle, Washington.

Kelowna, BC (PRWEB) December 26, 2013

Dr. Andrew Macdonnell, a Kelowna dentist, completed the comprehensive continuing dental education program offered by the Kois Center located in Seattle, Washington. The nine-course prestigious curriculum requires over 200 hours of continuing education encompassing all clinical areas of dentistry; gums, teeth, bite problems, cosmetics and implants involving both didactic and hands-on training.

“The training that I received at the Kois Center has transformed the way I practice. My ability to provide my patients with long-term dental health solutions has been greatly enhanced. It is now possible to change the lives of my patients by eliminating pain, enhancing their ability to chew and improving their appearance in a predictable fashion,” explained Dr. Macdonnell.

Dr. Macdonnell has always been passionate about dentistry and staying up to date with the latest technology and current techniques. Graduating from the Kois Center has been one of the most challenging and rewarding accomplishments of his career, allowing him to blend all facets of state-of-the-art dentistry into his practice. Now, Dr. Macdonnell is able to develop dental health strategies, which may involve gum re-contouring, bite reconstructions and smile makeovers all into one very predictable plan.

Dr. Macdonnell began his dental career in 1994 after graduating from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Macdonnell obtained his certification with the National Dental Examining Board of Canada and is licensed by the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia. He is also a member of the Canadian Dental Association and The Kelowna and District Dental Society. Dr. Macdonnell has received recognition from the Academy of Operative Dentistry and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society for his high standard of care.

He was an active member and former president of the Thompson Okanagan Tucker affiliated Study Club which specializes in the art and science of producing some of the finest gold work in the world for 12 years. He is certified in Cosmetic Botox Treatment by the Pacific Training Institute for Facial Aesthetics. In addition, he is on Faculty with the University of British Columbia where he enjoys Volunteering as a Mentor for the General Practice Residency program at U.B.C. through the Gospel Mission. His practice — Advance Dental Group— is open four days a week and is currently accepting new patients at his Cooper Road office.

About Advance Dental Group:
In an ever increasing world of greater and greater specialization it is hard to find a dental home with the broad range of dental services found at the Advance Dental Group. Dr. Macdonnell has dedicated his professional career to giving his patients young and old the best when it comes to their oral health. From prevention to restorative to cosmetic dentistry the range of services and level of expertise is hard to find. But what makes them different is a new way of thinking about dental care.

The traditional approach to dentistry does not always identify the underlying cause of oral disease. What if one could accurately predict the chances of having their teeth over the long-term and determine their risk level for disease or for needing cosmetic dentistry? Whether young or old, at the Advance Dental Group, risk assessment is at the core of what they do.

Advance Dental Group Creates ‘Smiles That Move You’ in Kelowna

by: Dr. Macdonnell December 17, 2013

Advance Dental Group, out of Kelowna, BC, has just launched a brand new website for people seeking all aspects of dental care in the greater Kelowna area in an effort to create “Smiles That Move You”.

Kelowna, BC (PRWEB) December 14, 2013

Dr. Andrew Macdonnell began his dental career in Kelowna nearly twenty years ago and has grown his practice into a full service office which does everything from preventive care to dental surgery. Advance Dental Group has just completed a complete redesign of their website to allow for better access to dental information and to give the greater Kelowna community an opportunity to learn about the Dentists and staff before their visit. Services at Advance Dental Group include family and cosmetic dentistry, crown and bridge work, dentures, implants, fillings, and of course preventive care.

Advance Dental Group is the one stop comprehensive dental facility. Preventive care is the foundation of any dental practice and that is absolutely the case at the Advance Dental Group. Regular checkups and cleanings are encouraged for all clients allowing them to hopefully avoid major dental overhauls. Preventive and basic care include regular cleanings, scaling, root canals, fillings, bite equilibration, and emergency dentistry. Families and children are very welcome at the Advance Dental Group and they hope to establish lifelong family relationships.

In Kelowna, Advanced Dental Group has become the premier destination for cosmetic dentistry. People from all walks of life now understand the importance of a bright smile. Dr. Macdonnell is continuously educating himself in the most advanced techniques of cosmetic dentistry. Whether it is veneers, bonding, or tooth whitening the Advance Dental Group uses only the best and latest materials and practices.

Some patients need crowns, others need bridges, and some need implants, and maybe a combination of all of them. The dentists at Advanced Dental Group can evaluate each patient and help them choose the best and most cost effective option. Advance Dental Group assesses oral health risk with a methodical evidence based approach. They understand that patients require options in treatment and hope to create patients for life.

Dr. Macdonnell realizes that many people are nervous or downright afraid of going to the dentist. Many people have had tooth aches for years, putting their health at risk, yet are so afraid of the unknown they have not had the pain addressed. Dr. Macdonnell and his professional staff want everyone in Kelowna to know that they have nothing to fear and they will be in the best possible hands at the Advance Dental Group.
